Rekiz Flashcards

Àpèjúwe

Rekiz Flashcards adds interactive, accessible flip cards to the block editor. Each card has a front and a back, and either side can be an image or formatted text. Both sides can carry their own audio, with a play button that follows the card as it flips — built for language learning, where hearing a word matters as much as seeing it.

Cards can live directly on a page, or be saved as a deck and reused. Edit the deck once and every page using it stays in step.

Built for language learning

  • Separate audio for the front and back of every card, so a prompt and its answer can each be heard.
  • A choice of audio button icons, set once per grid so a whole set stays consistent.
  • Right-to-left friendly, for Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi and Urdu.

Images, text, or both

  • Any side of any card can be an image or rich text.
  • Text cards take their colours and size from the grid, so a set looks deliberate rather than assembled.
  • Card width and shape are adjustable — from tall playing-card proportions through to square and widescreen.

Reusable decks

  • Save a set of cards as a deck and place it on as many pages as you like.
  • Use the Flashcard Deck block to keep a page in step with a deck, or the shortcode in classic themes and page builders.
  • Load a deckÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s cards straight into a grid when you want a one-off variant to edit on that page.
  • Duplicate a deck to start a new variant without rebuilding it.

Accessible by default

Accessibility is not an afterthought here:

  • Every card is a real button, reachable and operable by keyboard.
  • Screen readers are told which side is showing and what activating the card will do.
  • A visible focus ring, and a flip hint that stays on screen for touch users who have no hover.
  • Animation is dropped for anyone who has asked their system to reduce motion.

Privacy

The plugin makes no external requests. Nothing is sent anywhere, no analytics, no fonts or scripts loaded from third parties. Images and audio come from your own media library.

Source code and building

The plugin ships its human-readable source alongside the compiled files. The block sources are in src/, and build/ is generated from them with @wordpress/scripts (webpack). To rebuild:

  1. Install Node.js 18.12 or later.
  2. In the plugin folder, run npm install.
  3. Run npm run build. The build/ folder is regenerated from src/.

The PHP files in includes/, and the admin script and styles in assets/, are not compiled and are used as they are.

FAQ

What is the difference between a grid and a deck?

A Flashcard Grid holds cards that live on that page only. A deck is a saved set of cards, managed under Flashcard Decks, which you can place on any number of pages with the Flashcard Deck block. Change the deck and every page using it updates.

Can a card show text instead of a picture?

Yes. Each side of each card is set to either Image or Text, independently. A card can have a picture on the front and words on the back, or text on both sides.

Does every card need audio?

No. Audio is entirely optional, and the play button only appears on sides that actually have a sound file attached.

Can I use this without the block editor?

Yes, for decks. Every deck has a shortcode, shown in the deck list and in the deck editor, that works in classic themes, widgets and page builders.

Can I reuse the same cards on several pages?

Save them as a deck, then add the Flashcard Deck block to each page. Editing the deck updates every page at once.

Does it work with right-to-left languages?

Yes. Stylesheets are generated for right-to-left layouts, and the card text is centred rather than aligned, so Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi and Urdu all display correctly.

Does the plugin send any data anywhere?

No. There are no external HTTP requests of any kind.
