Cartaveo Maps embeds a map collection from the Cartaveo service into any post
or page, via a Gutenberg block or the [cartaveo collection="your-slug"]
shortcode. On collections with open contribution, your readers can submit
new places — submissions are captcha-protected and held for your
moderation on Cartaveo. Beneath the map, the plugin renders a crawlable list of the collectionÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s
entries — each one a link to its page, with its category and a description
snippet — plus schema.org ItemList/Place structured data. The embedded
map itself is served noindex, so this list is what search engines actually
read about your map.
The block and the shortcode both accept theme (light, dark or auto,
which follows each readerÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s own setting), basemap (minimal, streets,
midnight or tinted — the map drawn under the pins) and accent (a hex
colour that
tints the mapÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s links and its selected pin), so the map can be made to sit
with your theme rather than against it. An accent that would be unreadable
on the mapÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s background is ignored for text and kept only for the pin.
This plugin relies on the Cartaveo service to work — see the “External
services” section below for exactly what is sent, when, and under which
terms.
External services
This plugin connects to Cartaveo (https://cartaveo.com), the collaborative
mapping service the embedded collections live on. It is needed to render the
map itself and to fetch the collectionÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s entries for the crawlable list
under it. If you run your own Cartaveo instance, the plugin talks to your
configured base URL instead; everything below then applies to your instance
rather than the hosted service.
What is sent, and when:
- When a post containing the block or shortcode is rendered, your web
server requests the collectionÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s public entries from the Cartaveo API to
build the entry list. Only the collectionÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s identifier is sent, and the
response is cached for an hour, so this is not a per-visit request. - In your visitors’ browsers, the embed loader script and the map iframe
load from Cartaveo. Those requests include your siteÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s hostname and the
pluginÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s version, which Cartaveo uses for aggregate embed-usage
statistics; as with any web request, CartaveoÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s server also sees the
visitorÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s IP address and user agent. - The plugin sends no visitor personal data, no account data and no
cookies. If a visitor chooses to submit a place on an open collection,
they do so inside the map iframe, directly with Cartaveo.

The map inside the iframe draws its basemap tiles from OpenFreeMap
(https://openfreemap.org), a free tile service run by Hyperknot Software Kft.
Cartaveo does not proxy them, so your visitors’ browsers request the map
style and its tiles from OpenFreeMap directly as they pan and zoom. Those
requests carry the visitorÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s IP address and user agent, as any web request
does, and the referring page. OpenFreeMap needs no API key and states that it
keeps no user accounts, sets no cookies and does not store IP addresses in
its regular logs.

Does it cost anything, or do I need an API key?

No. The plugin is free and GPL-licensed, and creating and moderating
collections on Cartaveo is free too. ThereÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s no API key to configure — just
a collection slug. -
Do readers need a Cartaveo account to add a place?

No. If youÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’ve set the collectionÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s contribution to open, anyone can submit a
new place with a quick captcha check. Nothing shows up on your map until you
approve it on Cartaveo. -
How does moderation work?

You choose how open a collection is on Cartaveo: closed, invite-only, or
open to anyone. On a moderated collection, submissions sit in your
moderation queue there until you approve or reject them — nothing a reader
submits appears on your site automatically. -
Who owns the map data?

You do. The collection lives on your own Cartaveo account, the same as any
collection you create there. The plugin only embeds it. -
Can the map match my theme?

Yes. Both the block and the
[cartaveo]shortcode take a colour scheme
(light, dark, or auto, which follows each readerÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s own light/dark setting)
and an accent colour that tints the mapÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s links and its selected pin. An
accent that would be unreadable against the mapÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s background is dropped for
text and kept only on the pin, so a bad hex value canÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’t make the map hard to

Can I change the map itself, not just the colours around it?

Yes, with the Basemap setting. Minimal is the default: a pale grey map, or
a slate one under a dark colour scheme, so the pins carry the colour.
Streets is a full-colour map — green parks, blue water, named roads.
Midnight is near-black whichever colour scheme you picked, with white pins
to suit it. Tinted is the default map recoloured to your accent colour —
every shade of it pushed onto your hue, with the mapÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s own light and dark
left where they were, so it stays as readable as the grey one. The colour
scheme dresses the frame around the map; the basemap is the map, and the two
are set independently. -
Will it slow down my site?

The map itself loads lazily in an iframe, and the entry list under it is
cached for an hour, so thereÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s no heavy JavaScript added to your theme and
no per-visit round trip to CartaveoÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s API. -
How do I install it?

The usual way: search for “Cartaveo Maps” under Plugins Add New, or
upload the zip, then activate it. ThereÌtumọ̀ Yorùbá: ’s nothing to configure to get
started — create a collection on Cartaveo, copy its slug, and add the
Cartaveo Map block or the[cartaveo]shortcode to a post.
